Expertise in the landscape from above
Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist is a Swedish-Finnish photographer and visual artist whose work explores the abstract patterns, textures and structures hidden within the natural landscape.
Working primarily from the air, she transforms landscapes into images that often appear more like paintings or graphic compositions than traditional photographs. Water, volcanic formations, ice, rivers, sand and geological structures become lines, shapes, colours and textures — inviting the viewer to look at nature in an entirely different way.
Her aerial photography has received international recognition. She has been shortlisted twice in the Sony World Photography Awards, with her work exhibited internationally as part of the competition's exhibitions. She is also currently a finalist in the Swedish Mastership with her aerial photography.
Her artistic practice extends beyond photography. Julia creates Soundscapes projects that combine her aerial imagery with original classical piano improvisations, creating immersive audiovisual works designed for exhibitions, festivals and cultural projects. She has published two books in the Soundscapes series, Soundscapes: Rivers and Soundscapes: Volcano Craters.
Alongside her personal artistic projects, Julia works with location scouting, photography tours, lectures, workshops and commissioned visual projects, helping photographers and creatives discover and interpret landscapes from a new perspective.
Her work is ultimately about changing the way we see the familiar.
Step above the landscape — and see what has always been there.
